The Victorian Selective Entry test, at a glance.
Your child sits it in Year 8 to enter in Year 9. It’s one combined paper, run by ACER, split into three areas:

- The maths and quantitative questions sit together in one combined section, and the reading and verbal reasoning questions do the same.
- The writing component is split into two separate tasks.

How it's scored
Each section is scaled by ACER and rolled into a single overall score. The two reasoning sections carry the most weight at 40% each, while the two writing tasks make up the remaining 20%. Because the content never goes past the Year 8 curriculum, it's how sharply and how quickly a student works that separates them, not how far ahead they are.
- There's no fixed pass mark. The bar is set each year by how the whole applicant pool performs, so it's a ranking against everyone else, not a number to clear.
- Places across the four schools are handed out by where a student's combined score ranks, matched against the preference order the family submitted.
- Score reports come back broken down by section, so you can see exactly where the marks were won and lost.
